When it comes to a camping trip, there are some important things you should never forget to pack, especially if it is with a family. These items are divided into camping gear, food, light and fire, kitchen items, clothes, first Aid, personal items/toiletries as well as other items. These include;
You will need tents with poles, guy lines, ropes and stakes
Camping as a family definitely requires tents for all the family members including for the adults and children, especially if they are grown up. It is advisable to use strong and large tents for comfort during camping.
These are used as the ground cloths under the camping tents to prevent any possibilities of tear and wear of your tent against the ground.
Sleeping bags (especially for the Kids). Because you will not have to carry a whole mattress, sleeping bags are the perfect choice for camping in Uganda.
Sleeping pads or air mattresses are required and can work instead of the sleeping bags.
Blankets and sheets (for adults). Due to the coldness you will experience while camping, you will need blankets to keep you warm and what you need to know is that it won’t be as comfortable as your bedrooms but it’s worthwhile.
Pillows are important for comfortable and sound sleep while camping.
You will need Camp Chairs especially for relaxing or when you are having camp fires in the evenings.
Repair Kit for mattress, tent, pads and tarp
No matter the number of days you will be camping, you will need to carry the following kitchen items that include gas cylinder or stove (kerosene stove plus fuel or charcoal stove with enough charcoal), you will also need a lighter or match box, frying pan is necessary, pot for preparing dishes is also handy.
The other items you must not leave behind include plates, paper plates, silverware and bowls, Cups and mugs, Tea kettles for preparing tea in the mornings or evenings during Camp fires, Campfire grill is also important if you are interested in barbeque, Garbage bags to avoid littering around the Campsite, Paper towels, Sponge, dishtowels and dishcloths, A knife and cutting board.
Additionally, Coolers and ice are handy for storing perishables and keeping drinks cold
You will also need an extra bin for washing dishes (plates, mugs, spoons and bowls).
Enough water (this depends on whether there is water at the campground or not.
When it comes to meals, you will need to carry food that are easy and fast to prepare but you may need coffee, tea, jam/honey, bread, cereals, eggs, meat or fish, freeze/dried or already prepared meals, cereals, butter/margarine, milk (wither fresh or powdered), energy foods, bottled or canned beverages and many others depending on your tastes and preferences.
The recommended clothing and footwear to pack for camping include long trousers or skirts, shower shoes, flip flops or sandals, hiking boots and walking shoes, shirts and T-shirts, pajamas, shorts, rain jacket, sweaters/jumpers, swimming suit, socks, hats and bandanas among others.
You will need items like camera and memory cards, lantern/torch, binoculars, guidebook, umbrella, Cell phone, notebooks, maps and GPS receiver, two-way radios and toiletries like brush/comb, toothpaste and toothbrush, lip balm, hand sanitizer, mirror, cosmetics, sunscreen, shower water bag, insect repellant and toilet paper among others. You also need to carry some prescription medications such as anti-malarial and anti-diarrhea drugs among others.
Additionally, you may need to carry some fun stuff like playing cards, board games, kites, flying disks, toys and puzzles for both adults and children to avoid boredom during your camping safari. However, you shouldn’t be worried of boredom if you are planning to camp from any of Uganda’s National Parks.
